Director's Profile

Godwin Awabil is an Associate Professor and a Professional Counsellor at the Counselling Centre University of Cape Coast.  He holds a Ph. D in Guidance & Counselling from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria;  M. Phil (Guidance & Counselling), University of Cape Coast, Ghana; Bachelor of Education (Psychology), University of Cape Coast, Ghana and a Diploma in Religious Studies, University of Cape Coast, Ghana.

In his professional capacity, he has assisted the department of Educational Foundations of the University of Cape Coast to develop a PhD programme in Guidance and Counselling; assisted the Counselling Centre to win a World Bank Teaching a learning Innovation Fund (TALIF) project titled “Establishing Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) unit and HIV and AIDS resource unit and “Establishing a Study clinic” at the University of Cape Coast. 2005-2008; he also aided the Counselling Centre in the development and introduction of postgraduate M. A. and M.Ed. Sandwich programmes in Guidance and Counselling in 2006.

Awabil is the programme facilitator for the Co-operative League of the United States of America (CLUSA), an international Non-Governmental Organization in Sandema, Bulsa North District, Upper East Region of Ghana, 2003-2004. Which seeks to build the Capacity of Local Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to enable them participate effectively in local governance at the District Level.  Furthermore, to assist local Civil Society Organisations access funds for income generating activities.  He was from 2002-2003 the Circuit Supervisor for the Ghana Education Service (GES), Sandema, Bulsa North District, Upper East Region of Ghana.

Before his appointment to teach in the University of Cape Coast, he taught Christian Religious Studies and Guided and Counselled students at Sandema Secondary Technical School, Bulsa North District, Upper East Region, from 1997-1999.  He was the research assistant to the Non-Formal Education Division, Bulsa North District, Upper East Region in 1996; was a teacher in Social Studies, Agricultural Science and Life Skills at the Chiok Catholic Junior High School, Bulsa North District, Upper East Region, from 1990-1991.

Currently, he is the Director of the Counselling Centre, University of Cape Coast; he provides guidance and counselling services to both student and staff of the University; teaches in counselling and conducting research on Guidance and Couinselling; supervises postgraduate thesis, undergraduate research projects and teaching practice. Under his stewardship as Director, the Centre organised its maiden National Conference on Guidance and Counselling.  He has a considerable number of publications to his credit.
